Caen Castle

A must-see monument in Caen and Normandy

Built in 1060 on the orders of Duke William the Bastard, the fortified residential palace extends over more than 5 hectares.

Stroll along the ramparts and enjoy a breathtaking view of Caen.

Inside the ducal castle, visitors will walk through the Hall of the Exchequer, the Governor's residence (now the Normandy Museum), the Church of Saint George and the Garden of Plants, also known as the Garden of the Simples.

The Normandy Museum

The Normandy Museum of Caen presents the history of the region illustrated by archaeology and ethnology.

Remarkable collections of objects are on display, retracing the stages of Normandy's history from prehistoric times. The museum presents the lives of men from the Paleolithic to the arrival of the Vikings in the lower Seine Valley.

The archaeological rooms contain collections of weapons, jewellery and objects of everyday life, all placed in their proper context. Ethnological collections tell the story of Norman life from the 18th century to the present day.

The Museum of Fine Arts

The Museum of Fine Arts in Caen presents works ranging from the Italian and Flemish Renaissance to the present day.

European Renaissance artworks are on display, including paintings by Veronese, Tintoretto, Poussin, Champaigne and Rubens.  He also presents prints from the Mancel collection to the public.

The Caen Museum of Fine Arts also organises conferences. The museum's conservation library, with more than 20,000 volumes relating to art history, is open to the public.
