Discover this French jewel in the Channel

Located less than an hour and a half from your hotel in the city centre of Caen, Mont Saint-Michel is a must-see during your stay in Normandy.

A thousand years of history

It all began with a dream of the bishop of Avranches: to build a sanctuary on Mont Tombe.

This dream was fulfilled in 966 thanks to a community of Benedictines and it became Mont-Saint-Michel.

A church and a village were built. The latter welcomed the first pilgrims until they could no longer go.

With its success, the sanctuary had to expand if it wanted to increase its attendance.

The builders of the 11th century therefore constructed four crypts around the tip of the rock and a huge church.

Their work is an architectural feat. Further work was carried out thanks to a gift from the French king Philippe Auguste just before the Hundred Years' War.

A multitude of events followed: the French Revolution, the Belle Époque, the Second World War.

Despite some destruction, Mont-Saint-Michel remained standing and extraordinary work has made it possible to make this structural beauty accessible.

The museums of the most famous rock in France

The Maquaire Museum
This was the first museum to be built on the Mont in 1888.

On three floors, the collections of Amédée Maquaire tell the story of the place until then.

The State bought it in 1936 to demolish the building.

The maritime museum
Want to understand the tides in the Bay? This is the place to go!

A fine collection of 250 old ship models is on display for the enjoyment of all enthusiasts.

The archaeoscope
New technologies have settled on the Mont and they can be found in this museum.

Immerse yourself in the history of the City of Books with videos, light shows and projections of engravings.

The historical museum
Discover more than a century of history in this museum of the abbey.

A collection of ancient objects is on display, as well as medieval instruments of torture.

From up there, the Mount will look like a fortress.
